Adventure cruise company Hurtigruten Norway today revealed plans for a zero-emissions electric cruise ship with retractable sails covered in solar panels, which is due to set sail in 2030. The company currently has a fleet of eight ships, each with a capacity of 500 passengers, that travel along the Norwegian coast from Oslo to the Arctic Circle.

Crew members will be able to deploy three massive, 164-foot-tall sails covered with 16,000 square feet of solar panels from the ship’s upper deck when it’s windy or sunny. The three retractable wings will comprise 1500 m² (16,146 ft²) of solar panels with a total wind surface of 750 m² (8,073 ft²). Renewable energy from the sails or the charging port is stored in the ship’s giant 60 MWh battery storage system. There’s even an indicator on the side of the vessel to show the battery level.
