Uttar Pradesh is planning to set up floating solar power plants in partnership with top energy players, including National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), to expand its renewable energy inventory. The state is targeting 14,000 megawatt (Mw) solar power generation by 2027.
How does solar power work in Uttar Pradesh?
In a grid-connected rooftop system, the DC power generated from solar panels is converted to AC power using a power conditioning unit/Inverter and is fed to the grid. In Uttar Pradesh, a good amount of solar radiation is received around 300 days which is adequate for electricity generation.
Why is up promoting solar power?
“The setting up of new thermal plants and even renovation of old coal-fired plants is being discouraged for environmental issues all over the country. In such a situation, UP has to promote solar power to meet its growing electricity demand,” a senior energy department official said.
Who is implementing solar policy in Uttar Pradesh?
The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) will be the nodal agency for the implementation of this policy. Uttar Pradesh has performed inadequately in terms of achieving solar targets over the past few years. The state could achieve only 23% (as of Dec 2022) of its 2022 solar target of 10,697 MW.
Does Uttar Pradesh have a good solar potential?
As per an assessment by the National Institute of Solar Energy, Uttar Pradesh has a good solar potential of around 22.83 GWp. To harness this potential, the state released the UP Solar Energy Policy in November 2022. Uttar Pradesh is India's fourth-largest state and contributes to 16.2% of India’s population.
